Chloroquine phosphate child's dosage malaria prophylaxis

Each year up to 30 000 travelers are estimated to contract malaria and late or wrong malaria diagnosis in their home country may make things worse for them. Fever occurring in a traveler within three months of leaving a malaria-endemic area is considered a medical emergency and should be investigated urgently.

Apr 02, 2019 The dosage of chloroquine phosphate is often expressed in terms of equivalent chloroquine base. Each 500 mg tablet of ARALEN contains the equivalent of 300 mg chloroquine base. In infants and children the dosage is preferably calculated by body weight. Malaria. Suppression — Adult Dose 500 mg = 300 mg base on exactly the same day of each week. Where facilities for intravenous infusion are not available chloroquine can be administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection at a dosage of 2.5 mg/kg every 4 hours or 3.5 mg/kg every 6 hours until a total of 25 mg/kg has been given. Prophylaxis. Adults including pregnant women 300 mg weekly. Children 5 mg/kg weekly. Treatment of uncomplicated malaria due to susceptible strains of P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. vivax. Prophylaxis of malaria in geographic areas without resistance to chloroquine.

And as malaria can be severe in the non-immune, all visitors from non-malarious area to a malarious area should be protected. As there is no vaccine available for protection against malaria despite decades of research, there is a need for an alternative method that offers a fairly reliable protection against malaria.

Adults with low body weight and children—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. For destinations where chloroquine-sensitive malaria is present, in addition to mosquito avoidance measures, the many effective prophylaxis options include chloroquine, atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine, and tafenoquine. In countries where there is predominantly P. vivax, primaquine is an additional option. Use of anti-malarial drugs to prevent the development of malaria is known as chemoprophylaxis. The choice of chemoprophylaxis varies depending on the species and drug resistance prevalent in a country. It must be remembered that no chemoprophylaxis regime provides 100% protection.

Prednisone/Plaquenil question - I had some issues with the plaquenil, nausea and extremity swelling. My rheumy told me that he has never had anyone have leg and hand swelling on plaquenil but he does not doubt it is from the plaquenil. I'm off the prednisone and must say that I am working on adapting to the plaquenil because I can tell it is helping.
