Plaquenil will eventually help your hair loss, but that will be a very slow process over a long period of time since plaquenil builds up in your body pretty slowly. And you should keep your head a scalp protected from the sun as VeeJ said. Are you taking any prednisone at all? You are supposed to have a blood test every month to check on your liver and kidneys as long term use can affect them. I was told also to keep an eye out for 'floaters' in my eyes, as Plaquenil can cause macular damage to your retinas. I'm only on a low dose, but now have a black line floating over my eye.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Dec 13, 2012 After seeing my rheumatologist, he wants to put me on Plaquenil, mostly because I complained of recent onset of thinning/loss of hair which is freaking me out. But then I read about Plaquenil and its side effects and really freaked out. How to use Plaquenil. Hydroxychloroquine is usually taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, dosage is also based on weight. Plaquenil is supposed to help with hair loss, not contribute to it. I would also suggest giving it some more time especially since the side effects of plaquenil are supposed to lessen after a few months of use.
