The Royal College of Ophthalmologists RCOpth published guidance on hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine retinopathy screening in 2018. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists has released its latest guidelines for Screening and Management of Hydroxychloroquine Retinopathy. Retinopathy caused by hydroxychloroquine is very common and its prevalence in long-term use patients appears to be around 7.5% and depending on dose and duration of therapy can increase to 20-50% after 20 years of therapy.

During treatment, it recommends ‘annual eye assessment (ideally including optical coherence tomography) if treatment is continued for 5 years’ [1]. The current BSR guidelines state ‘Patients should have baseline formal ophthalmic examination, ideally including objective retinal assessment for example using optical coherence tomography, within 1 year of commencing an antimalarial drug’ [1].
