Hello all, I am currently new to this site and ran across the discussion about stopping Plaquenil. I have been taking Plaquenil for about 8-9 months and thought that it was not helping me because I still have a fair amount of joint pain, fatigue, muscle pain and so many other issues. We evaluated the long-term effectiveness of maintaining treatment with hydroxychloroquine sulphate HCQ to prevent major flares in quiescent SLE. Forty-seven patients with quiescent SLE who had been randomized to take HCQ n = 25 or placebo n = 22 as part of a 24-week withdrawal trial were evaluated for an additional 3 years. May 15, 2015 It would be unlikely IMO that the Plaquenil is the cause, since there is tapering necessary when stopping it and no documented 'withdrawal' syndrome associated with it. If you have taken it for a long time, it is probably not even out of your system yet, since Plaquenil has a half-life of 30-60 DAYS not hours.

Over the years on this site we have had quite a few people post that they didn't think that the plaquenil was working so they would stop taking it. I have done a lot of research on this drug and haven't run into anybody who has complained of the withdrawal effect.
