It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

Plaquenil. I have been on plaquenil for 8 years, started with 400 mg a day but now I have been taking only 200. Oct 11, 2010 Hi I was told to wean my self onto Plaquenil slowly with only half a tablet every other day to begin with and to always take it with food. It took me about a month to get onto a dose of 200mg a day. 200 didn't seem to make much difference so I was told to 'up it' to 400mg a day and it took me another month to taper up to that. January 18, 2019 at pm After taking plaquenil, 200 mg twice a day, for 18 years, I developed severe retina damage. I saw a ring of lights, told my eye doc whom I saw every 6 months, and he said he didn’t see anything during the retina exam. A year later, after moving to another state, I saw another eye doc for my checkup.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

  7. Generally, hydroxychloroquine is given in 200 mg or 400 mg doses, once per day. Higher doses can sometimes be used, but only in adults and not for all cases. Some people tolerate this medication much better than other people, so it is important that individuals who are considering taking hydroxychloroquine talk with their doctor about the lowest necessary dose to reduce or eliminate their symptoms.

Since being diagnosed with Lupus and taking the normal meds, particularly Plaquenil and Prednisone over about 6 years, I gained about 45 pounds. Part of that is due to less exercise, part due to having no appetite thus feeling like anything I can get down is ok. You take plaquenil twice a day, approximately 12 hours apart. The most common side effect is mild nausea and occasional stomach cramps. You can take it with food if it upsets your stomach. You should also have a complete eye exam before starting this medication and then every 6 months. In very rare cases, plaquenil can affect the eyes. For lupus erythematosus, one or two tablets are usually taken once or twice daily. For rheumatoid arthritis, one to three tablets are usually taken once a day. Hydroxychloroquine can be taken with a glass of milk or a meal to decrease nausea.
