    CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY Primaquine phosphate is an 8-amino-quinoline compound which eliminates tissue exoerythrocytic infection. Thereby, it prevents the development of the blood erythrocytic forms of the parasite which are responsible for relapses in vivax malaria. A.     The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.
